A hardwood board is bought once and kept for decades, which is why engraving rather than printing is the only sensible way to mark one. The laser burns into the grain, so the mark survives scrubbing, oiling and years of knife work rather than washing off in a season.

Maple is the classic: pale, hard, tight-grained and the highest contrast for engraving. Walnut is darker and softer underfoot for knives, with a subtler engraved mark. Cherry sits between and darkens attractively with age, so a board looks better in year five than year one.

Which wood engraves best?

Maple gives the highest contrast because the pale tight grain darkens sharply under the laser. Walnut engraves beautifully but subtly, since the burn is closer to the wood colour. Cherry sits between and is the best all-rounder.

Will the engraving wash out?

No. The mark is burned into the wood rather than applied on top, so it survives washing, scrubbing and re-oiling. It will lighten very slightly over many years as the surface is worn down, which most people consider an improvement.
